Cozy Chat with the Author Prisca Martin

Welcome, Prisca! Let’s get to know more about you both as a writer and a person.

Author Prisca Martin

Author Prisca Martin

Simi: What is your genre? Why did you choose to write it?

Prisca: My first book Unforgotten Love is a Historical Romance. I am also in the process of writing a Suspense Novel and Book Two and Three of London American Brides.
I have always wished to become an author. I chose to write my first book in Romance because I have always been a big fan of Historical Romance and my characters in Unforgotten Love kept speaking to me and telling me they wanted their story told.

Simi: Are you interested to write in some other genres in the future?

Prisca: I have two works in progress, one is a suspense and the other is a new adult story of a troubled female who has had to overcome tragedy and her own mistakes.

Simi: Which is the first book you read?

Prisca: Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter. I actually made Peter Rabbit the first book read to both my son and daughter and to this day I read them the tales by Beatrix Potter before bedtime.

Simi: Are you influenced by any author?

Prisca: I absolutely love Rose Gordon. I consider her the Queen of Historical Romance. She is amazingly talented and is so kind hearted to her fans. She took an interest in my writing and even encouraged me to write.

Simi: Do you write more than one books at a time?

Prisca: I have had that habit but have made myself focus on the London American Brides Series.

Simi: Are you a full-time author or you doing some other job?

Prisca: I am a full time mother, part time Author, part time volunteer at my son’s school, Tball Coach and Girl Scout Troop Leader. Plus a book blogger. So my writing gets limited to one day on the weekend and a few nights during the week from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.

Simi: Do you prefer pen and paper or Microsoft Word?

Prisca: I prefer pen and paper but have grown to love Microsoft Word because I have the tendency to write a whole story and never type it. I have tons of notebooks with stories.

Simi: Which one of your books is the best according to you?

Prisca: I only have written Unforgotten Love by I am falling in love with Book Two Unknown Love. I feel I am doing a tremendous better job at this book than the first.

Simi: Do your family members read your books?

Prisca: My family is old school and do not use Kindle so they are waiting for me to order it on paperback. But some of my close friends have read it on Kindle.

Simi: Tell us about your writing journey.

Prisca: When I was young, I would write simple short creative stories and plays. I stopped as I got older. A few years ago I went through a bad place in life and once things got better I started to write again. I would write in notebooks but never would type them. I probably have six novels on pen and paper. I finally replaced my broken lap top and started writing my suspense novel but got caught in a brain freeze. I began working on my London American Brides series and finally found the story I wanted to make my debut. As I work on the second book, I find that I am loving this book and wish I had done my first book more like this one. I guess I can say the saying you learn as you go is true.

Simi: Tell us about your latest book and your work in progress.

Prisca: My latest book and work in progress is Unknown Love Book Two of the London American Bride Novella Series. It is the story of Lady Amy Lindsey who is the daughter of a Duke who is forced into a betrothal and flees London with her best friend who is facing the same situation. The stowaway on Captain Gabriel Montey’s ship The Blue Rose. Their love story blossoms from there.

Simi: Do you reply to your readers?

Prisca: Yes. The moment I receive any correspondence.

Simi: Share some writing tips with us.

Prisca: I have found to write from the heart. Do not write when you are not feeling into the story.

Simi: Do you have any embarrassing tale to share with us? Mine is too embarrassing to share here. 🙂

Prisca: I have many to tell. I am a very clumsy person. I trip over my feet or nothing at all. I fell one day over nothing and landed face first into the pavement with more than 50 people watching who were in line buying tickets and waiting for the doors to a show to open.

Simi: Study books used to work for me like sleeping pills. So, I had to either listen to some good music or eat my favorite snacks (read junk foods :)) to keep my eyes open. Do you have any weird habits such as this?

Prisca: I drink two Monster energy drinks a day. One first thing in the morning and one in the afternoon. I have cut down. I used to drink four a day but have cut down.

About Valerie:

She would watch any vampire movie she could find.

Being a true romantic, Valerie was thrilled when she discovered the genre of paranormal romance. Her first read was one of Lara Adrian’s, Midnight Breed Series and from there she was hooked.

Today, Valerie has decided to take her darker, sensual side and put it to paper. When she is not busy creating a world full of steamy, hot men and strong, seductive women, she juggles her time between a full-time job, hubby and her two German shepherd dogs, in Northern IL.

Cozy Chat with the Author Michaela Miles

Welcome, Michaela. Let’s get to know more about you both as a writer and a person.

Author Michaela Miles

Author Michaela Miles

Simi: What is your genre? Why did you choose to write it?

Michaela: The genre for my story in the Love Least Expected anthology is contemporary romance, and it was chosen by the characters. All my stories start with a character and they, and the story they want to tell, suit a certain genre, so that’s what I write 🙂

Simi: Are you interested to write in some other genres in the future?

Michaela: I already write in several different genres (romance, erotica, paranormal, crime, fantasy) but I wouldn’t rule out writing in others as well.

Simi: Which is the first book you read?

Michaela: The first book I have clear memories of reading is The Tale of Peter Rabbit. I used to read it to my grandmother when I was really small – before I started primary school. She still has the book in her bedside drawer and when we visited her in more recent times, my children used to read it to me too.

Simi: Are you influenced by any author?

Michaela: As a prolific reader in my school years, this is a hard list to narrow down. The first would be Bryce Courtenay. His books surround you and immerse you in another time and place right from the first page. The second would be Anne McCaffrey. I’ve read countless science fiction/fantasy books, but for some reason Killashandra’s stories stayed with me. And the third is a bit of a nod to the geeky Browncoat side of me – Richard Castle. Not only do I love reading the books, but I love the meta-ness of it all. A TV show about a bestselling author which spawns the exact same series of books that he’s written in the show to be sold in the real world. What’s not to love about that?

Simi: Do you write more than one books at a time?

Michaela: Always! I usually have at least one completed manuscript with beta readers, another in the editing process, and several others in various states of completion. Not to mention many documents full of character and plot ideas that pop up while I’m trying to write something else.

Simi: Are you a full-time author or you doing some other job?

Michaela: I currently own and run a website design business and a photography studio, as well as having three school-aged children, and am in the middle of completing a Bachelor of English Literature, so yes I have lots of other jobs to do other than writing!

Simi: Do you prefer pen and paper or Microsoft Word?

Michaela: I much prefer to type my work. My handwriting is terrible (doctors are more legible) and gets worse the faster I write, so I love to just be able to type as I think. Sometimes though, even typing isn’t fast enough to keep up with my brain when the story is flowing really well!

Simi: Which one of your books is the best according to you?

Michaela: I only have one story published so far, but many others in various states of completion so I’m not sure I can pick a best one. My personal favourite story has been a long ‘labour of love’ project that will probably never be published.

Simi: Do your family members read your books?

Michaela: Only my husband. No one else in my real life knows I’m an author.

Simi: Tell us about your writing journey.

Michaela: I’ve always written stories, dreams, diaries, etc since before primary school. When I starting moving towards my thirtieth birthday, I decided I’d spent enough time doing things for everyone else, and wanted to do something for me, so I took serious steps towards becoming a published author, including joining a critique website, building social media platforms, and reading everything I can find about publishing and marketing, etc.

Simi: Tell us about your latest book and your work in progress.

Michaela: My story in the Love Least Expected anthology is a contemporary romance called Keep Calm and Eat Chocolate. Here’s a short excerpt from the first chapter:

Love Least Expected

Love Least Expected

Keep calm and eat chocolate.

It used to be my favourite motto, and the slogan of our family empire—an empire I was next in line to control until certain family members staged a coup. Now they’re sitting pretty in my house and my company. They spend my money and live it up, while I holiday in this amazing white palace where the lights never go out, and padded rooms is an exaggeration.

I know everyone in here says this, but I’m not crazy.

My family, if you could call them that, spent a long time trying to make it look like I am. It worked, or I wouldn’t have questioned myself and sought counselling, and they wouldn’t have put me in this place. I read the regulations once a few months ago: involuntary commitment order under section something of the blah-blah act of some year that’s not as archaic as I imagined.

Translation: bullshit.

How can it be legal to institutional someone for refusing medical treatment for a mental illness they don’t bloody well have?

At least the place reflect the current century. State of the art facilities, comfortable rooms, decent food, and the ability to purchase luxuries if you have the means. Actual money isn’t allowed, of course. If you follow the logic that I’m crazy, then a credit card is a lethal weapon. Everything must been done by fingerprint: access to rooms, our private locker, meds, the lot.

My day consists of set meal times, menus, exercise, recreation, activity times, therapy sessions, and medications. Not much of a change to my real life actually. Gym session, breakfast with my PA to review my calendar, meetings, correspondence, more meetings, often a function for dinner with a nice piece of man-candy on my arm, a run or a swim, sleep. Repeat.

Now, though, I don’t have a choice to blow off a meeting or grab a takeaway on my way home from a late night event.

The only upside to the place I now call home is the gardens. Not only do they obscure the fences, giving an illusion of freedom, but they are quiet and usually unoccupied. Most of the other residents have unnatural phobias involving open spaces, insects, or plants. In Henry’s case it’s the colour green. So I often have an hour or more to myself to focus on taking my real life back.

I’ve considered everything. I could jump the fence, drug the night staff, cause a riot, start a fire, even hire a helicopter to fly in and pick me up. Anything except participate in the program. I won’t admit to being crazy, and prove the bastards who put me here right.

That’s never going to happen.

Instead, I watch and listen. The staff assumes the residents either can’t understand or don’t care, so they talk freely. I know who has money problems, husbands with a bit on the side, naggy ex-wives, and the ones I could bribe to get out— if I had access to my damn money.

Arseholes. I still can’t believe the people I trusted had me snatched up in the middle of night and committed to this psychiatric facility, especially when they’ve seen what a vindictive bitch I can be. I bet they think I’m a problem solved. I also bet they haven’t planned on my use of the phone here to retain a new lawyer.

It’s the only task I’ve spent my time on; the only one I’ve thought about.

Until the day Christopher Tailor arrived.

Simi: Do you reply to your readers?

Michaela: Yes, at every opportunity I can. I reply or engage with all emails, Facebook messages, likes, shares, retweets, everything I get because readers are the most important people in an author’s team (and it does take a team to publish a book!).

Simi: Share some writing tips with us.

Michaela: My main advice for aspiring authors is to keep writing to “the end”. You can’t start editing, or querying, or anything else unless you have a completed story. After that my strongest advice is to have other people read your work. Even if you can’t afford an editor, you can’t hope to catch all your own typos. There are great free online communities where you can exchange someone reading your work for you reading theirs, and I can’t recommend my favourite of those (www.scribophile.com) enough.

Simi: Do you have any embarrassing tale to share with us? Mine is too embarrassing to share here. 🙂

Michaela: I have a lot of those! Most recently I had several moments all in the same week that made me seriously question my brain: I left some meat I’d bought at the butcher on their counter, I left the fuel cap off after filling up, and lost my phone while it was on silent. All individually easy things to do, but put together made for a pretty crazy week!

Simi: Study books used to work for me like sleeping pills. So, I had to either listen to some good music or eat my favorite snacks (read junk foods :)) to keep my eyes open. Do you have any weird habits such as this?

Michaela: I actually find writing while children’s TV is on in the background the most productive. Probably because I’ve been forced to do it that way for the last 15 years! So I suppose you could say that’s a weird writing habit 🙂

10 Fun Facts

(I’m sorry, I find favourite questions very hard to answer, so I’ve omitted them, if that’s ok)

Rapid Fire Round

Love or Friendship: Friendship

Vampire or Werewolf: Vampire

Amazon or Smashwords: Smashwords

Chick-Lit or Historical Regency: HR

Robert Pattinson or Ian Somerhalder: Can I choose neither? I’m more a fan of the old-school sophistication of a silver fox 😉

5 Things Your Readers Don’t Know About You

1. I’ve lived in sunny Queensland my whole life and I hate the heat. Give me a nice, cold, rainy day or week and I’m happy.

2. I love science fiction. If I had to write a single genre for the rest of my life, it would be that.

3. I talk to myself, inanimate objects, the TV, my pot plants – anything that will listen, as my lovely children aren’t very good at that!

4. I’m not at all artistic. I can’t draw or paint – I can barely colour inside the lines 🙂

5. I hate cheese but I love Twisties and Cheezels.

Michaela: Thanks very much for agreeing to interview me 🙂

Simi: You’re most welcome, my dear. 🙂

ChitChat with the Cover Designer: Anya Kelleye

Today I’m pleased to welcome the much talented cover designer, Anya Kelleye! She has designed really beautiful covers for some of my very dear author friends. 🙂

Simi: Hi, Anya! Welcome!

Anya: Hi, Simi! Thanks for having me on your blog.

Simi: Well, let’s start our ChitChat by telling a little about yourself and how it all started.

Anya: It’s kind of interesting how I started creating cover art. My friend Lauralynn Elliott had published her first book and was getting ready to publish her second. She had designed her own first cover but wasn’t really happy with it and was talking about her new one and trying to decide what to do with it. She had an image she liked that she wanted to use so I told her to send it to me, and I would play around with it and see what I could come up with. So messing around in Microsoft Word and playing with the fonts I came up with a design for Club Blood. Lauralynn loved it. When she got ready to publish her next book, I worked on that one and then the next and then the next. Still all in using Word. LOL Then I discovered a design program and I’ve been using that ever since. Started picking up some more authors that saw Lauralynn’s covers and it’s built from there. So I started attending some book conventions and picked up more clients. I have loved every minute of it!

Simi: Do you design only book covers?

Anya: No, I also design art for marketing materials as well, such as business cards, bookmarks, web graphics for website, blogs and Facebook covers.

Simi: Do you design for a specific genre?

Anya: I do not limit myself to a specific genre. I enjoy reading and designing for all genres! I don’t want to be stuck with just one.

Simi: I want to have an idea about the process. Can you share it with us, please? 🙂

Anya: Well, with book covers, it’s mostly I will have an author contact me through my website or through Facebook. I basically have them send me what kind of idea they might have for their cover already or if they are not sure to send me a synopsis of their book along with character descriptions and perhaps a favorite scene in their book. Then I look for images that perhaps will go along with their ideas, genre, etc. I do a mock-up of a cover and send it to them and then we go from there. I like to create a relationship with my author to know what works best for them. I like for them to have the best cover they can, so sometimes there maybe be several conversations and changes and sometimes the first draft I come up with is spot on and just needs a few tweaks.

Simi: Have you done any course for the designing purpose or it comes naturally to you?

Anya: No courses, just lots of experience with designing things. Whether it be cover art, decorating for events, crafting designs (I also design jewelry and flower arrangements and wreaths, etc).

Simi: Checking reviews is simply not my thing to pick up my next read. I personally pick up a book when I get attracted toward the cover. What are your views on the importance of having a good book cover?

Anya: I think a well-designed book cover is very important. It is the first step in marketing your book, whether it is on a shelf, in a bookstore or on the screen of an online bookstore. It’s the first thing a reader sees and you want it to grab their attention. You want them to be intrigued to find out more about it.

Simi: Pick some of your favorite designs and tell us the inspiration behind them.

Anya: Hmmm….favorites. I like them all actually. Sort of like children, you can’t favor one over the others. The inspirations all come from the books that the authors pen. I just try to give a visual storytelling experience.

Simi: Please give us the link where interested authors can find your pre-made covers.

Anya: Well, I don’t have premade covers at this time. I have been too busy creating custom designs to be able to make any. LOL But you can find me at the following places:

Website: AnyaKelleye.com

Facebook (profile page): fb.com/Anya.Kelleye

Facebook (like page): fb.com/AnyaKelleyeDesigns

Simi: Thanks for spending time with us and for creating such mesmerizing covers. I adore each one of them. Keep up the good work! 🙂

Anya: Thank you sooo much for inviting me. I have enjoyed my visit here.

Purple Rain by T.J. West Blog Tour

Tour_BannerPurple Rain Blog Tour

Title: Purple Rain

By: TJ West

Blog Tour: September 12th – 18th

Hosted By: Author Sandra Love

My_interview_banner Welcome, T.J.! Let’s get to know more about you both as a writer and a person.

Me: What is your genre?

T.J.: Adult Romance…(For now) Why did you choose to write it? Because I’m a romantic at heart and I love reading about sex and romance 🙂

Me: Are you interested to write in some other genres in the future?

T.J.: Possibly, maybe New Adult but not sure when that will happen.. maybe soon.. Romance is pretty much it for me at the moment.

Me: Which is the first book you read?

T.J.: Oh Wow, I haven’t a clue.. Can I tell you what book I loved though? What got me to love books? “The Outsiders” I read that for my High School class assignment and fell in love with it.

Me: Are you influenced by any author?

T.J.: Yes, so many!!!!! Colleen Hoover, Mia Sheridan, Kristin Hannah, Chevy Stevens.. So many!

Me: Do you write more than one books at a time?

T.J.: No, I don’t, but have several stirring at once in my head LOL.

Me: Are you a full-time author or you doing some other job?

T.J.: I am a stay at home mom, so that is my number one job, but since they are now in middle school and High school I have more time for writing.. But I do consider writing a part time thing since I have a lot of cleaning around the house hahaha.

Me: Do you prefer pen and paper or Microsoft Word?

T.J.: I most definitely prefer Microsoft Word.. Writing is in the past for me LOL.

Me: Which one of your books is the best according to you?

T.J.: Ok, so far it is the one I am working on now, Rain Street. I am really digging deep inside my characters and letting them speak more loud and more clearly for me to hear. Their voices are always yelling at me.. I love my first and second book, but time has been good for my writing. I am growing as an author..

Me: Do your family members read your books?

T.J.: Yes! My Aunt read my first book and Oh My God, my 92yr old Grandfather read it! Not awkward at all! hahahaha..

Me: Tell us about your writing journey.

T.J.: It’s been a wonderful experience and very challenging.. Like I have explained above, I have been learning, as time goes on, to listen to my characters and to let them speak to me. I am growing and developing, hoping to make people love my work.

Me: Tell us about your latest book and your work in progress.

T.J.: My latest book is called “Rain Street” It is the third installment to The Rain Series… I am loving it so much I think about it all the time! It’s my best work by far. I really want this book done before Christmas but don’t have a release date just yet.

Me: Do you reply to your readers?

T.J.: All the time! I love interacting with them!

Me: Share some writing tips with us.

T.J.: I have a very vivid imagination and use it to my ability when writing. When you have that kind of imagination, write it down. I now use a Thesaurus for replacing words, such as the word, SAID.. That can be overdone. I also now write all dialogue, first, for each chapter.. Then I fill in the those blanks.. It has helped me so much! When I get writers block, I take a day or two or however long to get my brain back to focusing on that one story.. It really does wonders for my imagination.

Me: Do you have any embarrassing tale to share with us? Mine is too embarrassing to share here. 🙂

T.J.: Ha ha! YES too many to count! I fell on my face, running to my kids school one time cuz I was late from from falling asleep !!! Humiliating! Thank God I lived down the street from their school!

Me: Study books used to work for me like sleeping pills. So, I had to either listen to some good music or eat my favorite snacks (read junk foods :)) to keep my eyes open. Do you have any weird habits such as this?

T.J.: Hahaha, nope.. Since I am a stay at home, I need my sleep to get up way early and get my kids up, make lunches, make breakfast…..I read at night to go to sleep.. I love reading… So when I get very sleepy, I stop and go to sleep hahaha!

10 Fun Facts
